Idea 1
This is a long itinerary and we can alter it to fit in with the time you have in India.
India is a vast, extraordinary country. For many travellers, a visit is a once-in-a-lifetime journey. No single itinerary can capture it all. With time, though, you can experience a remarkable cross-section. This in-depth route through the north weaves together the great Mughal monuments and the spiritual heart of the country. It also takes in tiger country and the palace cities of Rajasthan. As ever, it is fully flexible, entirely private and tailored to you.
The journey begins in Delhi, India’s energetic capital. From there, you fly to Varanasi, the spiritual heart of the country. Here you wander the timeless ghats along the sacred Ganges. Meanwhile, you witness rituals performed for centuries. In short, it is an intense and profoundly moving introduction.
Next, fly to the fascinating Khajuraho region. There you explore the intricately carved Chandela temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Afterwards, continue through the sleepy, historic town of Orchha, with its riverside cenotaphs. Then press on towards Agra. If you wish, pause at Gwalior to see its imposing fort.
In Agra, the Taj Mahal awaits. A private guide greatly enhances the experience. So its history and architecture come vividly to life. We also plan the visit around the best light and the quietest moments. As a result, this wonder of the world feels personal rather than crowded.
Travel south to Ranthambore National Park for a wildlife adventure. Here private game drives with expert naturalists improve your chances of a sighting. With luck, you spot tigers and other native species. Meanwhile, the fort-studded landscape makes every drive memorable.
Journey on to Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan. It is famed for its forts, palaces and bustling bazaars. To balance city and countryside, spend a night at Chattra Sagar near Nimaj. This tented camp overlooks a serene lake. So it makes a lovely contrast to the energy of the cities.
Continue to Jodhpur, the Blue City. Here the mighty Mehrangarh Fort dominates the skyline. Below it, traditional life carries on at a timeless pace. From Jodhpur, travel south through Bishnoi villages to Jawai. Set amid the Aravalli Hills, the area is famed for its leopards.
Finally, arrive in Udaipur, Rajasthan’s most picturesque city. It is famed for its lakes, palaces and romantic mood. To finish, end your journey in Mumbai, a vibrant, cosmopolitan city. From there, you depart for home, or extend further into India.
Few journeys capture northern India as completely as this one. In a single trip, you move from the Ganges to the carvings of Khajuraho. From the Taj Mahal, you pass to the thrill of a tiger forest. Then come desert forts and lakeside palaces. The contrasts are part of the point. Meanwhile, the rural interludes give the highlights room to breathe.
Across such a varied route, the hotels suit each setting. You might sleep above the Ganges one night. The next, you stay near the temples of Khajuraho. Later come a Taj-view room and a tented camp in tiger country. Finally, palaces and forts await across Rajasthan. As always, every property is one we know personally.
Throughout, the logistics are made to feel effortless. So you travel with private guiding at every stage. Where it helps, internal flights cover the longest hops. Meanwhile, the scenic drives become part of the experience. As a result, even this ambitious route never feels rushed. In short, you simply enjoy the journey.
This itinerary suits travellers with time to spare. For example, it rewards anyone wanting the full sweep of the north. Equally, it suits returning visitors keen to go deeper. Couples and small groups enjoy it most. Above all, it delivers culture, wildlife and comfort in one trip.
Generally, the cooler, drier months from October to March are most comfortable. They suit the plains, the cities and the parks alike. By contrast, the pre-monsoon heat can be fierce. So we usually favour the winter window. Either way, we tailor the timing to you.
Between the great highlights, the countryside offers room to breathe. For example, a tented camp beside a quiet lake. Equally, a leopard-dotted hillside at Jawai. Elsewhere, a Bishnoi village going about its day. So these gentle stretches balance the busier cities. In short, they often become the most treasured memories of all.
For many, this is the trip of a lifetime. So we plan it with particular care. Above all, the aim is a seamless, unforgettable journey through the north.
Because it is comprehensive, it works best over roughly two and a half to three weeks. Of course, it can be condensed by dropping a region or two.
It is ideal if you have the time and want a broad cross-section. That said, those with less time often prefer a shorter route first.
Sightings are never guaranteed in the wild. Even so, Ranthambore is one of India’s more reliable parks. Meanwhile, the landscapes and other wildlife make every drive worthwhile.
Entirely. The route, pace, hotels and experiences are all shaped around you. Simply share your dates and interests, and we will craft the rest.
