Sarnath

Sarnath is where the Buddha came to preach his message after attaining enlightenment at Bodhgaya. The site is just 13kms from Varanasi and makes for an interesting side trip when including Varanasi on a tour of India. In the 3rd century, Ashoka constructed  a series of stupas and monasteries in the area, but Buddhism fell out of favour and the site was abandoned. At its centre is the 128 foot Dhamek Stupa, and other points of interest include the frescoes in the modern Mulagandha Kuti Vihar and the Ashoka Pillar.
