Amber Fort (or Amer Fort) is located just north of Jaipur and if you want to visit one quintessential Rajasthani fort, then it has to be Amber. It dates from the late 16th century, and is located on a hill overlooking the Maota Lake below. There are four levels in the fort, each with its own courtyard. The fort was connected to nearby Jaigarh Fort by an underground passage way, ensuring that if they got into trouble they could move to the more well-protected fort. The level of detail in the architecture is exquisite, blending sandstone and marble to create buildings of exceptional beauty. It is from Amber that Jai Singh II laid out the plans for the city of Jaipur.
