Sri Lanka is exceptionally diverse. So each day brings something new and profoundly interesting. This classic tour comes with your own private driver-guide throughout. As a result, you enjoy real flexibility to seek out hidden gems. The island is also packed with lovely boutique hotels, many in beautiful settings. We love to jazz up the experience, too. For example, you might see the ancient cities by bike, or learn to cook in Galle.
The Cultural Triangle
From a gentle first night near Colombo, drive up to the Cultural Triangle. In the evening, climb the 5th-century Sigiriya rock-fortress. The next day, explore Anuradhapura, the oldest of the ancient cities. It is famous for the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, grown from a sapling of the Buddha’s own. Then visit Mihintale, the birthplace of Buddhism here. Another day, cycle around Polonnaruwa before looking for elephant at Minneriya.
Kandy
Next, drive to Kandy via the Buddhist caves at Dambulla. En route, you can stop at the Millennium Elephant Foundation. The following day, explore the city and its craft villages. Then head above the town for sweeping views. To finish, join the evening pooja at the Temple of the Tooth.
The Tea Country by Train
From Kandy, board the scenic train into the hills. We book the first-class observation car for the best views. As you climb, tea plantations and rolling hills unfold. On arrival, settle into the hill country for two nights. The next day, visit a tea factory and take a gentle walk.
Yala: Into the Wild
Then drive down to Yala, via the stunning Ella Gap. That evening, head out on a safari, hopefully spotting leopard and wild elephant. The next morning brings a second drive. Afterwards, continue on towards the coast.
Galle and the Beach
In Galle, take a walking tour through the historic alleyways of the fort. Alternatively, enjoy a leisurely cycle through the countryside. Finally, drive the short distance to the beach for a two-night stay. So you end on the palm-fringed southern coast, feet up.
Where You Stay
Naturally, the hotels are a real part of the pleasure. First, the Wallawwa eases you in. In the Cultural Triangle, you might choose Ulagalla or Vil Uyana. In Kandy, Kandy House or Elephant Stables await. Up in the hills, Ceylon Tea Trails is a treat. At Yala, you have Chena Huts or Cinnamon Wild. In Galle, the historic Amangalla awaits, then Rock Villa or Aditya on the coast.
How You Travel
Throughout, you travel privately with your own driver-guide. So the day-to-day plan bends entirely to you. Meanwhile, the scenic train adds a memorable change of pace. The drives, in turn, are broken up with sights along the way. As a result, the journey feels varied yet relaxed.
Best Time to Travel
Generally, the drier months from December to March suit this southern loop best. By contrast, the south-west sees the monsoon in summer. So we usually favour the winter window. Either way, we advise on the ideal timing for your dates.
Local Encounters
What we love most is showing the sights differently. So you might cycle the ancient cities rather than drive. Equally, you could learn Sri Lankan cookery in Galle. Elsewhere, a village visit reveals the rural way of life. Meanwhile, a tea-estate walk shows the hills up close. As a result, even the classics feel fresh and personal.
Wildlife Highlights
Wildlife is woven right through this route. At Minneriya, for example, elephants gather near the lake. At Yala, meanwhile, you look for leopard. You may also spot deer, crocodiles and countless birds. So the safaris are a real thrill. Either way, the parks feel wonderfully wild.
A Land of Contrasts
The joy of this trip is its sheer variety. First come ancient cities and sacred sites. Then follow misty tea hills and a scenic train. Soon after, a wild safari at Yala. Finally, the palm-fringed coast. So no two days feel the same. In short, it captures the whole island in one journey.
Who It Suits
Above all, this suits first-time visitors wanting the full picture. Equally, it rewards anyone who loves variety. Couples, families and small groups all enjoy it. As a result, it remains our classic Sri Lankan tour.
The Train Through the Hills
A real highlight is the climb into the tea country by rail. So we book the observation car for the finest views. As the train winds upward, plantations stretch away on every side. Meanwhile, the carriages buzz with local life. As a result, the journey itself becomes a treasured memory.
Designed Around You
As ever, this classic route is only a starting point. So we tailor the pace, the sights and the hotels to suit. In the end, it is entirely your own.
