Ascent of Jebal Shams (Qarn al Ghamaydah)
This is a tough 9-12 hour one-day trek - so not for the casual walker. You start on the rim of the An Nakhur Gorge at 1,950m and trek up to the summit at 2,997m for the best views in Oman.
Oman is one of the finest trekking destinations in the Middle East, and this private walking holiday weaves together a series of superb day-walks. So the route is just a starting point, shaped around your fitness and appetite for walking. You are looked after by expert trekking guides and your own driver throughout. Better still, you return each night to lovely hotels. The dramatic landscapes do the rest.
We suggest a flight landing into Muscat early, so you drive straight up into the hills. So you begin in the Jabal Akhdar region, with its gentler trails. There you acclimatise to the climate and the cuisine. The cool air of Jabal Akhdar is a joy after the city. You stay at the Sahab Resort.
Your first trek is the lovely two-hour Four Village Walk. So you wander through abandoned villages, above terraced orchards and dramatic gorges. Jagged peaks rise on every side. Meanwhile, lush green fields cling to the slopes. As a result, it is a gentle but spectacular introduction.
Next, head to the Jabal Shams region, with tougher trails and matching views. So you can pause in Nizwa for a cultural interlude, seeing the fort and souq. The following day brings the Balcony Walk, above the stunning An Nakhur Gorge. Another day tackles the long Goat Herder’s Trail, a six-hour descent to Misfat al Abriyeen. The peak of Jebel Shams is Oman’s highest. You stay at The View.
Then leave the mountains and drive south, stopping at Wadi Bani Khalid. So you set off on short trails around this beautiful wadi, with its emerald pools. Afterwards, continue into the great dunes of Wahiba Sands. The sands of Wahiba are a striking change of scene. You stay at 1000 Nights Camp.
Finally, return to Muscat for some well-earned rest. So you experience a little dune bashing as you leave the desert. You can stop at more wadis on the way back. Then settle in for a couple of relaxed nights. You stay at the W Muscat.
Naturally, every hotel is chosen with walkers in mind. First, the Sahab Resort in Jabal Akhdar. Then The View in Jabal Shams. Next, 1000 Nights Camp in the dunes. Finally, the W Muscat for R&R.
The walks range from gentle to genuinely strenuous. So your guide tailors each one to your fitness. The Goat Herder’s Trail and Balcony Walk are the toughest. Meanwhile, easier alternatives are always available. As a result, walkers of most levels can enjoy it.
Generally, October to April is ideal for walking, with comfortable mountain temperatures. By contrast, high summer is extremely hot. The heights, meanwhile, stay cooler than the plains. So we plan the walking around the seasons. Either way, we advise on the ideal window for your dates.
Few realise what a walker’s country Oman is. So you trek dramatic gorges one day and desert dunes the next. Meanwhile, the trails are blissfully quiet. As a result, it feels like a genuine discovery.
The variety keeps every day fresh. First come the gentle Jabal Akhdar trails. Then the dramatic gorges of Jabal Shams. Soon after, an emerald wadi. Finally, the great dunes. So no two walks feel the same.
As ever, this is only a starting point. So we shape the walks, the pace and the hotels to suit. In the end, the trip is entirely your own.
The walking earns a proper reward at the end. So you swap boots for the comfort of Muscat. Meanwhile, the beach and pool soothe well-worked legs. As a result, the trip ends in calm.
Above all, this suits keen walkers who love comfort too. For example, it is ideal for ramblers wary of camping. Equally, it rewards anyone craving dramatic scenery. Couples and small groups enjoy it most.
In the end, Oman surprises every walker. So the gorges and dunes stay with you long after. Meanwhile, the comforts make each day a pleasure. As a result, it is a firm favourite.
Each season paints the trails differently. So winter brings crisp, clear mountain air. Spring, meanwhile, adds blossom to the terraces. As a result, the timing shapes the whole experience.
Above all, the logistics are handled for you. So the driver-guide links each walk effortlessly. Meanwhile, the comforts stay high throughout. As a result, you simply enjoy the trails.
Only the desert night is under canvas, and in great comfort. Otherwise, you return to a hotel each night. So you walk by day and relax in comfort.
A reasonable level of fitness helps for the longer trails. That said, we tailor each walk to you. Easier options are always available.
Generally, October to April is most comfortable. We will advise on timing for your dates.
Entirely. The walks, the pace and the hotels are all shaped around you. Simply share your dates and interests, and we will craft the rest.
