Nizwa & Jabal Shams
Nizwa is the regional capital of this area and is known for its excellent Friday livestock market, and impressive fort. Even better are the forts of Bahla and Jabrin, located at the base of the mountains offering superb views from the battlements. As you move up into the Jebal Shams you reach the villages of Al Hamra and Misfat al Abryeen – both superb examples of traditional stone villages. The village of Birkat Al Mawz is also wonderful, especially its date palm oasis. Jebel Shams is the highest mountain in Oman at 3,005m and is the site of the spectacular Wadi Nakhr, popularly known as the ‘Grand Canyon of Oman.’ You can do a lovely day-trek around this, and also opt for a number of other wonderful village walks in the region. Opt for either the Abandoned Village Walk or the Goat Herder’s Trail.
