This elegant colonial mansion has recently been converted into a stylish and luxurious boutique hotel, located on the outskirts of Kandy. Named after the elephants that were housed in the garden of this former nobleman’s house, Elephant Stables offers an unsurpassed level of comfort and style and guests are made to feel at home as soon as they arrive. All the rooms are named after locally grown herbs and spices and the stand alone cottage in the garden can easily fit an extra bed in the living room. The spectacular Royal Tented Suite is huge with 2 bedrooms and an exotic feel and is an exact replica of the tents at the wonderful Aman-I-Khas in India. There is plenty to do in the area including exploring Kandy and the revered Temple of the Tooth as well as the pretty Botanical Gardens and the Apsara Spa is on hand to soothe away any tension.
Millis Potter Insight
Elephant Stables is a great option if you want to stay in Kandy itself as it is only 10 minutes from the centre but away from the noise and traffic that Kandy often suffers from. The funky and contemporary style may not be for everyone, especially if you are looking for the tea planter style traditiong, but every effort has been made to create a stylish and chic ambience. Families are welcome and kids well catered for and it may be easier to stay here in town with smaller children than take some of the winding roads up into the hills. The food here is good but as you are close to Kandy you also have other options to eat out nearby. There are lots of movies and music on demand so something for everyone, even on a rainy day and the reading room is packed full of interesting books on the area.
