The owners of the working Horathapola Estate, an hour’s drive north east from the airport, have recently converted the property into a peaceful guesthouse offering just 3 rooms. One of them is a two-bedroom family suite and all of them have polished wood floors, white linens and are full of original antiques. During your stay, travel around the estate in a traditional bullock cart learning about the workings of the coconut grove and about the other crops grown on the property. The pool is large and lovely to laze by whilst recovering from your flight and get your first – or last – taste of traditional Sri Lankan cuisine here with the delicious curries served in authentic clay pots.
Millis Potter Insight
If you choose to avoid Colombo and want to get on with your journey around Sri Lanka, Horathapola is the perfect place to start – or end – your trip as it is only an hour from the airport. Although The Wallawwa is closer and is more of a luxury boutique hotel this is a great alternative if you are looking for a smaller guesthouse feel as there are only ever a maximum of 8 guests staying. The food is delicious and truly authentic, introducing you to the delights of Sri Lankan cuisine and it is fascinating travelling around the estate and learning about the many uses of the coconut crop and seeing the paddy fields harvested.
