Explore some of the arts and crafts that are made around Kandy, being able to visit some of the small rural communities, far away from other tourists. This is possibly the best place to see ‘local life’ in Sri Lanka. See drum making in Kurugala, mat-weaving in Dumbara before seeing the silver, brass and wood carving in Gadaladeniya. Back in Kandy, have the option of seeing the Botanical Gardens and Commonwealth War Cemetary followed by heading to Upper Lake Drive, from where you will have an amazing view of Kandy from above. Continue down into the town to walk through the local markets before visiting the Temple of the Tooth, home to the Buddha’s Tooth and known locally as the Dalada Maligawa, best visited in the early evening when they have an interesting pooja ceremony taking place.
