The Real Souks of Marrakech
For those who have seen the main souks and really want to escape the tourists and see the Real Souqs of Marrakech, then this walking tour takes you completely off the beaten track. You begin at Souk el-Khemis, in what is Marrakech’s largest flea market. Each time the luxury La Mamounia hotel gets renovated, the old contents find themselves here. Discover cedar wood doors and classic wrought iron windows. It’s a souq that Moroccans visit so that you will see second-hand sofas, TVs and mobile phones. It’s a perfect place to see local life in action.
You then reach the Bab Debbagh Tanneries. You will know about them from the acrid smell long before you reach the tanneries. We tend to do this tour in the morning when you can see the tanners at work. You see them transforming leather hides into a rainbow of hues. We will take you into one of the buildings surrounding the tannery to view it from above, with some fresh mint to put in your nose to make it a little bit more bearable. It’s an exciting experience nonetheless.
Your walking tour then leads to the wealthier quarter of Sidi Bel Abbes. You then delve into the backstreets of Derb Ennakhla and Rue Bab Doukkala. These two areas are far less tourist-heavy than the central souks and make for an interesting addition to your experience of Marrakech.
