A trekking holiday in the Atlas Mountains lets you walk through timeless Moroccan Berber villages and along dramatic valleys beneath towering peaks. Better still, you stay in lovely lodges and boutique hotels. So each morning you wake refreshed and ready to walk. The route runs from the little-visited Ouirgane Valley to Imlil, looked after by guides and porters.
Why Trek the Atlas
This is mountain walking with real comfort. So you trek hard by day, then relax properly each night. Meanwhile, the scenery shifts from orchards to high passes. Berber hospitality, in turn, warms every village. As a result, it is adventure without the hardship of camping.
Marrakech to Begin
First, fly to Marrakech for two nights to settle into the climate. You stay at the lovely Dar Zemora, with its pool and gardens. So you can ease in gently before the trek. If you wish, explore the nearby souks. Equally, try a street-food tour or a hot-air balloon over the Agafay Desert.
Into the Ouirgane Valley
The next day, your driver takes you to the Ouirgane Valley, in the foothills. This first day is a gentle acclimatisation walk, from Imi Oughlad to Tinzert for lunch, then on to Marigha, around five to six hours. You stay at the lovely Domaine Malika, with a surprisingly beautiful pool. So you cool off before heading higher.
The Azzaden Valley
Then comes the climb into the Azzaden Valley, with a picnic lunch en route. You pass through olive groves and traditional Berber villages, reaching Ait Aissa. It is a steady five-to-six-hour day, rewarded with wonderful views. You stay at the welcoming Azzaden Trekking Lodge. As a result, you are perfectly placed for the big day ahead.
Over the Pass to Imlil
The third day is the longest, at five to seven hours. So you pass Tizi Oussem and the waterfalls at Tamsoult, among the largest in the range. Then you climb to Tizi Mzzik at 2,500m, the highest point of the trek. Afterwards, you descend into Imlil, the iconic mountain village. There you stay at the famous Kasbah du Toubkal.
For Keen Walkers
For the more ambitious, there is a tempting option. So we can arrange a summit of Mount Toubkal, North Africa’s highest peak. This adds two to three days between the lodge and Imlil. The mountain rises to 4,167m. As a result, it is a real bucket-list challenge.
To the Ourika Valley
From Imlil, a 4×4 takes you east to the Ourika Valley. So you swap your boots for somewhere to put your feet up. You stay two nights at Kasbah Bab Ourika, with its glorious views. Here you can relax, or take a short or longer day-walk. Either way, the pace finally slows.
A Relaxing Finish
Finally, return towards Marrakech and the lovely Berber Lodge, set beneath the peaks. So you spend your last days at leisure. If you wish, dip back into the souks for some shopping. Then it is a short transfer to the airport. As a result, the trip ends in calm.
Where You Stay
Naturally, the lodges are a real part of the pleasure. First, Dar Zemora eases you in near Marrakech. Then Domaine Malika, the Azzaden Lodge and Kasbah du Toubkal carry you across the mountains. Finally, Bab Ourika and the Berber Lodge round things off.
Best Time to Travel
Generally, spring and autumn are ideal for trekking, with clear skies and wildflowers. By contrast, high summer is hot at lower altitudes. Winter, meanwhile, brings snow to the high passes. So we plan the walking around the seasons. Either way, we advise on the ideal window for your dates.
Who It Suits
Above all, this suits walkers who love comfort too. For example, it is ideal for keen ramblers wary of camping. Equally, it rewards anyone craving mountain air and Berber culture. Couples and small groups enjoy it most. As a result, it remains a firm favourite.
A Walk Through the Seasons
Each season paints the trails differently. So spring brings blossom and wildflowers. Autumn, meanwhile, offers the crispest views. In summer, the high routes stay cool while the valleys warm. As a result, the timing shapes the whole experience.
Designed Around You
As ever, this is only a starting point. So we shape the route, the pace and the lodges to suit. In the end, the trek is entirely your own.
A Rewarding Finish
The walking earns a proper reward at the end. So you swap boots for the calm of the Berber Lodge. Meanwhile, the souks are close for a last browse. In the end, you relax knowing you have truly crossed the Atlas.
A Land of Colour
Part of the magic here is the contrast. So mountains fall away to desert and palm groves. Meanwhile, the light shifts with every hour. As a result, no two days feel the same.
