The Detail
Overview
This haven of elegance and tranquillity is only minutes away from the clamour of Marrakech’s central square. Indeed, this elaborate palace was Churchill’s favourite haunt. In summing up La Mamounia, he wrote that it is simply ‘the loveliest spot in the world’. In short, La Mamounia is a magnificent fusion of oriental splendour, intricate Moorish architecture and refined Art Deco style. What’s more, it has recently refurbished and lavishly restored to its former glory.
Rooms & Suites
Rooms and suites are exceptionally spacious and sumptuous to a fault. There is sensational service on offer from staff, who effortlessly combine courtliness with friendliness. Unquestionably, this enhances the magic of staying at this superb hotel. Three fabulous villas and the seven themed suites are some of the most luxurious rooms in Marrakech. These range from the quintessentially English Churchill Suite to the elaborate Louis XV style of the Palmeraie Suite or even the quirky and mostly original Orient Express Suite.
Restaurants & Bars
Four excellent restaurants offer an incredible variety of cuisine. Firstly, get your fix of fine-ding Moroccan fare at Le Marocain. Secondly, try superb Italian food at L’Italien par Jean-Georges. Thirdly, relish the flavours of Asia at L’Asiatique par Jean-Georges. Finally, spend a long, enjoyable lunch beside the pool at Le Pavillon de la Piscine. Five bars, including the wonderfully atmospheric Churchill Bar, bring together Marrakech’s high society in a sophisticated melange.
Facilities
The exquisite grounds of La Mamounia are some of the finest in Morocco. Seventeen glorious acres are brimming with roses and orange trees which frame a vast swimming pool. The swimming pool is built around an island of palm trees, feted as the city’s most Instagram-perfect location. Additionally, the outstanding leisure facilities include tennis, squash and boules courts, a ten-acre driving range and a fully-equipped fitness centre. Furthermore, the spa is exceptional. Simply soaking up the rose-scented atmosphere in this exotic and historically resonant hotel undoubtedly remains one of life’s great experiences.
Millis Potter Insight
Firstly, La Mamounia is one of Marrakech’s iconic institutions. New hotels come and go, but La Mamounia is that has always offered the best sense of refined hospitality. Above all, it’s lavish and opulent. You stay here because you want that sense of timeless sophistication that La Mamounia offers. Another massive plus point is the extensive and fragrantly wonderful gardens. You quite simply don’t find another hotel this close to the centre of Marrakech with this much space to breathe. It certainly comes with a hefty price tag, but guests are usually never disappointed.
