Trek through Berber Villages in the Ouirgane Valley
Many guests staying in Marrakech tend to visit the Ourika Valley or the area around Imlil to get their experience of the Atlas Mountains. The area around the Ouirgane Valley is somewhat of an off-the-beaten-track secret and our preferred destination for a five hour day trek. The untouched Berber villages are a joy to visit, and this trek is not too strenuous. In the winter months, the snow-capped mountains of the Atlas tower over this pretty rusty-red valley. A patchwork of verdant green fields mingles with mountain villages and terraced slopes.
Your walk begins with the 1.5-hour drive to Ouirgane Village. You pass through Asni on the way, which has a superb local market happening on Saturdays. You then walk to Anraz. Here you find an interesting Jewish community with a synagogue. Continue to the village of Torort. Should you want a night in the mountains, you can spend the night at the lovely Kasbah Africa. The highlight is the village Tikhfist – a small settlement perched above the valley. Here you stop for lunch in a traditional Berber home. Finally, walk to Angouni before rejoining the road at the Ouirgane Valley and driving back to Marrakech.
