Walking Holiday in Oman
Jabel Akhdar - Jabal Shams - Wahiba Sands - MuscatOman is one of the best trekking destinations in the Middle East, and there are a host of superb walks and hikes to be found.
If you love the freedom of the open road, a self-drive holiday in Oman may be the perfect fit. So we skip the accompanying guide, yet still arrange experiences through your hotels and a secret list of places to stop. You top and tail the trip with two nights at the W Muscat on either side. To make it seamless, we handle private transfers and a private city tour to begin. After that, the country is yours to explore.
The whole appeal here is independence. So you set your own pace, with no fixed schedule to follow. Meanwhile, we hand you a hand-picked list of off-the-beaten-track gems. The hotels, in turn, can arrange guided experiences as you wish. As a result, you enjoy real adventure with a safety net.
Begin in Muscat, where we meet you and transfer you to the W Muscat for two nights. The next day brings a private tour of the city and a fine introduction to Oman. So you see the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and the alleys of Muttrah souq. The gentle charm of Muscat eases you in. Then you are ready to set off.
Next, your car hire begins and you collect your 4×4. So you are fully briefed on the route before heading inland. For the intrepid, the off-road Wadi Bani Awf leads dramatically towards Nizwa. Then you climb into the Jabal Shams range. The heights of Jebel Shams are Oman’s highest. You stay at The View.
The next day, explore the Jabal Shams region at your own pace, using our list of hidden gems. The hotel can drop you at Wadi Ghul for the Balcony Walk, then collect you at the top. So you walk the rim of Oman’s Grand Canyon without retracing your steps. An afternoon stroll reaches the abandoned village of As Sab. Meanwhile, Nizwa’s fort and souq are an easy detour.
Then drive south towards the dunes, perhaps via the forts at Bahla and Jabrin. So you might also pause at Ibra and its superb souk. Stop at an oasis-like wadi to cool off along the way. Arrive at your desert camp for a glorious sunset over Wahiba Sands. The dunes of Wahiba glow gold at dusk. You stay at a comfortable camp in the sands.
Finally, return to Muscat, joining the stunning Sur-Muscat beach road. So you can stop at remote wadis as you go. Then enjoy your final two nights at leisure by the sea. As a result, the trip ends in comfort. You stay again at the W Muscat.
Naturally, the hotels are chosen with care. First, the W Muscat by the beach. Then The View, perched in the Jabal Shams mountains. Finally, a characterful desert camp in the dunes. Of course, we can tailor each to suit you.
Above all, this suits confident, independent travellers. For example, it is ideal for those who love a road trip. Equally, it rewards anyone craving freedom and flexibility. Couples enjoy it most.
Oman is one of the easier countries to self-drive, with good roads and light traffic. So the main routes are straightforward in a 4×4. That said, the off-road sections need a little confidence. We will brief you fully and suggest only what suits your comfort.
Generally, October to April brings the most comfortable weather. By contrast, high summer is extremely hot. The mountains, meanwhile, stay cooler than the plains. So we tailor the timing to your plans. Either way, we advise on the ideal window for your dates.
The variety is the real joy. First come the beaches of Muscat. Then the dramatic gorges of Jabal Shams. Soon after, the forts around Nizwa. Finally, the silent dunes. So no two days feel the same.
Even on a self-drive, you are never truly alone. So we are on hand throughout your journey. Meanwhile, each hotel can arrange guides and activities. As a result, you gain freedom without the worry.
As ever, this is only a starting point. So we shape the route, the nights and the hotels to suit. In the end, the adventure is entirely your own.
In the end, self-drive brings a special satisfaction. So every discovery feels truly your own. Meanwhile, the comforts of Muscat bookend the adventure. As a result, you return with real stories to tell.
You drive the three-night interior loop yourself. Muscat, however, is covered by private transfers and a guided tour. So the driving is the adventurous middle of the trip.
A 4×4 is delivered to your hotel and collected at the end. So you have the right vehicle for the wadis and mountains. We arrange all the details.
Generally, October to April is most comfortable. We will advise on timing for your dates.
Entirely. The route, the nights and the hotels are all shaped around you. Simply share your dates and interests, and we will craft the rest.
