Idea 1
You can of course extend any of the elements to make it even slower!
Do you want a truly relaxing pace, but with plenty of culture along the way? If so, Kerala is perfect. This itinerary meanders gently through its delights. Crucially, you spend three nights in each place rather than two. So you have time to settle in, not just rush from one thing to the next. You stay in charming boutique hotels and lovely homestays. Throughout, you have your own driver and private guides for the experiences.
Begin in Cochin for three full days. The town is famous for its colonial fort area. So set off on a walking tour through the old Dutch and Portuguese quarters. Soon you reach the vibrant spice market. On the second day, relax by the pool. Alternatively, simply amble around, pausing at a coffee shop or two. It is an unhurried, atmospheric start.
Next, continue to Munnar, famous for Kerala’s dramatic tea plantations. You stay at Windermere Estate, ideal for wandering the hills at your own pace. With three nights here, there is no need to rush. Instead, sit on the lawn with a book and a cup of estate tea. All around, the green hills roll away in every direction.
From the hills, delve into Kerala’s rural heartlands at Dewalokam. The family are wonderful hosts, and there is an inviting pool in the garden. Over three days, you can fully explore. For example, walk through their organic farm. Equally, visit a local village and school. So you connect with everyday Keralan life in the most genuine way.
Afterwards, work your way back towards the backwaters. Here you stay three nights at the gorgeous Philipkutty’s Farm. You might join an immersive cookery experience in the community. Better still, the backwaters are close by. So it is easy to board a private houseboat for a day, drifting along the palm-fringed canals.
Finally, head to the coast for three nights of complete rest. After such a gentle journey, the beach is the ideal full stop. So swim, unwind and let it all sink in.
All in all, this is a wonderfully relaxing way to see Kerala. There is no rushing, and plenty of time to put your feet up. Yet you still enjoy superb experiences throughout. As a result, you return refreshed and reinvigorated. Of course, any element can be tailored. We can add nights, trim them, or weave in other parts of the region.
One quiet joy of Kerala is how gentle the logistics are. The driving distances are short and scenic. So you never spend a whole day in the car. Meanwhile, your private driver and air-conditioned vehicle make every transfer comfortable. That ease is what lets the slow pace work. In short, you arrive relaxed and settle straight in.
Generally, the most popular window runs from October to March. Then the weather is typically warm and dry. By contrast, the monsoon brings lush landscapes but heavier rain. So we usually favour the drier months. Either way, we advise on the best timing for you.
Much of the pleasure here comes from where you stay. Each place is chosen for its setting and warmth. First, Windermere offers tea-estate calm. Then Dewalokam brings a family welcome and an organic farm. Later, Philipkutty’s adds waterside seclusion. Because you have three nights in each, you settle in properly. So you live in each place, rather than out of a suitcase.
The experiences, meanwhile, are gentle but real. For example, a guided plantation walk in the hills. Equally, a cookery lesson using produce grown on site. Elsewhere, a slow drift through the backwaters by private houseboat. So you learn and connect without ever feeling rushed. In short, it is travel that restores you.
Above all, this trip suits anyone craving a slower pace. For example, it is ideal after a busy tour elsewhere. Equally, honeymooners and older travellers love it. Families, too, find the short drives a relief. As a result, it is one of our most restful India journeys.
Happily, Slow Kerala also combines beautifully with other regions. For example, add a few days in the wildlife parks. Equally, pair it with a wider tour of the south. Some guests even begin in the north and unwind here. As a result, it makes a wonderful, restful finale to a longer trip. Either way, we shape the whole route around you.
Above all, the pace. With three nights in each place rather than two, you can relax and go deeper. You also stay in characterful homestays rather than constantly moving on.
Allowing three nights per stop, the full journey runs to around two and a half weeks. Of course, we can shorten it by trimming a stop or two.
Generally, October to March is most popular, when the weather is warm and dry. The monsoon, meanwhile, is dramatic but wet. We will advise on the best timing.
Very much so. The gentle pace, short drives and relaxed stays suit families well. Equally, they suit anyone who prefers to travel unhurriedly.
