Idea 1
You can opt for a range of Maldivian Resort, whether you want to be in an over-water villa in stilts or in a beach villa. You might like to be a little further away from it all by taking a seaplane to a more remote island.
“Kerala and the Maldives: Culture, Backwaters and Beaches
It takes just an hour to fly from Kerala to the Maldives, and together they make a perfect combination of culture, gentle adventure and beach. There’s nothing better than arriving on your Maldivian island with stories to tell of the experiences you’ve had, and Kerala is ideal for providing them — colonial cities, tea-clad hills and the famous backwaters, all at an easy, relaxed pace. As with all our trips, it’s entirely private and tailor-made, with your own driver and expert guides for the experiences along the way.
Cochin
You begin in Cochin, staying in the historic fort area shaped by Dutch, Portuguese and British influence, once a focal point of the spice trade. Wander the narrow streets with a private guide, past crumbling colonial mansions and the iconic Chinese fishing nets in the harbour. Hop on a rickshaw to Mattancherry Palace, with its remarkable Hindu murals, then continue to Jew Town and the bustling markets where spices are still traded — a wonderfully atmospheric, sensory start to the trip.
Munnar
From the coast you’re driven up into the hill country, where the rolling tea plantations around Munnar are a sight to behold. Spend a few nights in a former colonial tea bungalow, walking among the plantations, visiting a working tea factory, or simply taking in the cool air and the green, sculpted hillsides at your leisure.
The Backwaters
Work your way to Alleppey and head out on a private houseboat along the Keralan backwaters and Lake Vembanad. Watch the world drift slowly by as you’re served the freshest Keralan fish curry and a glass of wine, before mooring overnight in a remote village, feeling utterly away from it all. It’s one of the most memorable and restful experiences in all of India.
Lake Vembanad
For your final two nights in Kerala, stay on the banks of Lake Vembanad — relaxing by the pool, or walking into local villages with a private guide to meet the communities and see daily life up close. It’s a gentle wind-down before the islands.
The Maldives
Drive back to Cochin and fly to the Maldives, where a speedboat (or seaplane) whisks you to your island. Then simply kick back and let the calming luxury of a Maldivian resort work its magic — turquoise water, soft sand, and nothing more demanding than deciding where to watch the sunset.
Why This Pairing Works
Kerala’s variety and the Maldives’ serenity complement each other perfectly: you arrive at the beach already fulfilled by culture and discovery, ready to do absolutely nothing. As with all Millis Potter tailor-made holidays, every element — the Kerala route, the hotels, and your choice of Maldivian resort — can be tailored to you.
Why Kerala First
Starting in Kerala means you arrive at the beach already rich with experiences — the spice markets of Cochin, the cool green tea hills, a night drifting through the backwaters. The driving distances in Kerala are mercifully short and scenic, so the cultural part never feels like hard work, and the gentle pace eases you naturally towards the total relaxation of the islands. It’s the ideal warm-up: enough variety and discovery to feel you’ve truly travelled, without ever being rushed or exhausted by the time you reach the Maldives.
Tailored From Start to Finish
Every element of this trip is shaped around you. In Kerala we choose the homestays and boutique hotels that suit your taste, and add the experiences — a cookery lesson, a plantation walk, a village visit — that appeal most. In the Maldives we match the resort precisely to your style, whether that’s a lively house reef, a serene adults-only hideaway or a family-friendly island with space for everyone. As with all our holidays, you can add nights, swap experiences or weave in another region, so the journey fits you perfectly rather than the other way around.
A Relaxed, Rewarding Pairing
For travellers who want a taste of India without an exhausting itinerary, this is close to perfect. Kerala delivers culture, scenery and gentle adventure at an easy pace, and the Maldives provides the ultimate reward at the end. The short hop between them keeps travel simple, and the whole trip can be as active or as restful as you wish. Many guests find it the ideal first encounter with the subcontinent — immersive enough to feel real, relaxed enough to feel like a holiday.
Short Hops, Big Variety
One of the quiet pleasures of this trip is how little of it is spent travelling. Kerala’s distances are short and scenic, the flight to the Maldives is around an hour, and every connection and transfer is arranged for you. That ease is what lets such a varied holiday feel genuinely restful — you pack in colonial history, hill country, backwaters and beach without ever feeling you’ve spent the trip on the move.
