Located in the Idukki district on the high ranges of the Western Ghats in Kerala, Windermere Estate is provides dramatic views over the tea plantations below. It has something of a Scottish highland feel about it, set within a 60 acre cardamom plantation and is an ideal base if you want to head off walking in the nearby countryside.
There are 18 bedrooms spread across the gardens. Opt or the Garden Rooms which are on the ground floor with a veranda opening out from the bedroom or go for the Cottage Rooms which are on the upper floor and have better views. The Planter Suites are larger still and have even better views. The rooms are simply furnished with terracotta or wood-varnished flooring, crisp linens and carefully chosen fixtures and fittings. There are no TVs or snazzy mod-cons but you will likely be out and about when you are visiting Munnar. Dinner is served in the Barn Restaurant and quite often there are barbecues on offer. There is no alcohol licence at Windermere Estate, so it is best to bring your own supply to be consumed on your veranda.
A visit to Munnar is all about getting out and about, and there are a number of short or longer day walks to choose from. A walk to the top of Chokkan Mudi is ideal if you like to catch the views, and another to Attukudu Waterfall is well worth the effort. You might also like to enjoy a visit to the local Tea Factory. Wildlife enthusiasts can also catch at glimpse of the nilgiri thar mountain goat which reside in the nearby Eravikulum National Park. For the most active, the ascent of Meesapulimalai at 2,600 metres is also an option which takes about 8 hours.
