The Detail

The island paradise of Philipkutty’s Farm, hidden away in a channel off Lake Vembanad, is a wonderful off-the-beaten-track homestay that provides an authentic opportunity to immerse yourself in the life of the Kerala backwaters. Including Philipkutty’s farm in a family adventure to Kerala offers the chance to completely disconnect, cared for by your charming hosts the Mathews family, and enjoy delicious food, convivial hospitality and an unforgettable sense of serenity.

On arrival by traditional vallam boat, you will be shown to your accommodation, one of six self-contained rustic waterfront villas, beautifully finished in traditional clay tiles and wooden ceilings. Each en-suite villa, filled with antiques and family heirlooms, comes with a verandah where you can sit out and enjoy the soothing sights and sounds of the backwaters, from fireflies flashing after dusk to chanting from the nearby temple. The farm itself produces organically grown fruits, vegetables and spices that find their way, along with fresh fish and prawns, into lovingly prepared meals that reflect the Syrian Christian roots of the family. If you’re a keen cook, you can book classes to see how the ingredients are prepared and learn a few new recipes.

Activities iat Philipkutty’s Farm are appropriately low-key but never less than fascinating. One of the family will be happy to show you the surrounding farm where you’ll learn about the growing and harvesting of coconuts, mangoes, cacao, nutmeg and pepper. You can borrow a bicycle and explore the local village markets and temples, take a sunset cruise in a vallam and watch the birdlife, or simply find a peaceful spot to paint or photograph. If you wish, visits by a local Ayurvedic massage therapist or yoga instructor can easily be arranged. However you choose to spend your time, and whether you come on your own, as a couple or as a family, you will come away refreshed and grateful for having gained a truly privileged glimpse into life in the Kerala backwaters.
