Sri Lanka & Maldives

Best time to go: All Year
Best for: Honeymoons, Culture & Beach, Cultural & Immersive

What makes Sri Lanka and the Maldives such a great pairing? In truth, it is like mixing a gin and tonic. Together, the two are utterly refreshing. So it is perfect for a two-week winter escape, a honeymoon or a family holiday. The Maldives alone can be a little much. Therefore, you want a week of something more immersive first. Happily, Sri Lanka is the perfect addition. As ever, the whole journey is private and tailored to you.

The Perfect Pairing

This suggested route blends culture, adventure and beach. First, Sri Lanka delivers ancient cities, hills and wildlife. Then the Maldives offers pure, switch-off relaxation. Meanwhile, the itinerary flexes around your interests. For example, you might spend longer in Sri Lanka. So simply sit back, smile, and let it unfold.

Colombo: A Gentle Arrival

Begin near Colombo, where a first night close to the airport makes sense. After a long flight, there is no need to rush. So you stay somewhere lovely, such as Horathapola Estate or the Wallawwa. Then you simply put your feet up and acclimatise, drink in hand.

The Cultural Triangle

The next day, your private driver takes you up to the Cultural Triangle. Here you get your culture fix. First, climb the spectacular Sigiriya rock-fortress at sunset. Another day, explore ancient Anuradhapura, the oldest of the cities. You might also see Mihintale, the birthplace of Buddhism on the island. Then visit remarkably preserved Polonnaruwa, ideally by bicycle. To finish, head to Minneriya National Park to look for wild elephant.

Kandy and the Hill Country

From there, drive south via the Buddhist caves at Dambulla. Pause in Kandy to see the Temple of the Tooth. Then continue up into the tea plantations for three nights. This corner is stunningly beautiful, with verdant hills and long views. So spend your days walking, or simply gazing out, tea in hand. If you wish, venture further to Nuwara Eliya, Horton Plains or Adam’s Peak.

The Maldives

Finally, return to Colombo for the short flight to Male. On arrival, you are met and whisked by speedboat to your island. From there, the choice is yours. We can offer all-inclusive resorts, over-water villas or barefoot island retreats. So the beach finale is matched precisely to you.

Where You Stay

Naturally, the hotels are chosen with care. In the Cultural Triangle, you might stay at Ulagalla or Wildgrass. In the hills, Ceylon Tea Trails is a real treat. Then your Maldivian resort is selected around your style and budget. Of course, we know each one personally.

How You Travel

Throughout Sri Lanka, you have a private driver-guide. So you enjoy real flexibility to explore. Meanwhile, the drives are short and scenic. Then a simple one-hour flight links you to the Maldives. As a result, the whole trip feels effortless.

Best Time to Travel

Generally, the winter months suit the south and hills best. That said, the route adapts in summer, when the north is at its finest. By contrast, the south-west coast then sees the monsoon. So we tailor the timing to your dates. Either way, we advise on the ideal window.

Wildlife in the Triangle

Wildlife adds another dimension to the Sri Lankan leg. At Minneriya, for example, wild elephants gather near the lake. Meanwhile, the scrub and forest teem with birds. So an afternoon safari is well worth the time. With luck, you watch herds moving in the open. Either way, it is a thrilling contrast to the ancient cities.

The Maldives, Your Way

The island finale is deliberately yours to shape. So we begin with what you want from it. For some, that means an over-water villa and a house reef. For others, a barefoot island or a serious spa. We then match the resort accordingly. As a result, the beach week fits you perfectly.

Who It Suits

Above all, this pairing suits travellers wanting both culture and rest. For example, it is ideal for a first trip that still relaxes. Equally, it works beautifully for honeymooners. Families, too, enjoy the balance. As a result, it remains one of our most popular suggestions.

Easy to Tailor

Finally, the route flexes around you. For example, spend longer in Sri Lanka before the islands. Equally, add wildlife or the south coast. As ever, every detail is shaped to suit your plans.

A Refreshing Contrast

The real magic lies in the change of pace. First come temples, rock-fortresses and tea hills. Then follow slow days by a turquoise sea. So the islands feel all the sweeter after the touring. As a result, you return both inspired and properly rested.

Designed Around You

As ever, this route is only a starting point. So we shape the pace, the hotels and the resort to suit. In the end, the trip is entirely your own.

    Customise Your Itinerary

We can tweak and change any element of this itinerary and you can depart on any day you want, add nights here and there, and we can fully customise your day-to-day experiences depending on your interests. Here are just a few ideas of many that we can look at and discuss when we come to plan your tailor-made itinerary.

    Idea 1

If you have time, it might be worth actually staying a night or two in Kandy on the way from the Cultural Triangle to the Hill Country. If you do this, you can then take the train through the plantations.

    Idea 2

You can of course extend your time in Sri Lanka and visit the south coast and explore Galle. There is a flight from the Tea Country to Koggala, just outside of Galle.

    Idea 3

There are countless resorts in the Maldives, and these are only suggestions. We can offer a whole range of options and it will be worth discussing which resort is perfect for you.

    Idea 4

Flights generally go via the Middle East, so why not have a stop-over in Dubai on the way to Sri Lanka or back from the Maldives?

    Idea 5

If you want to add a little more wildlife into the itinerary, why not include Wilpattu National Park, close to the Cultural Triangle.

    Idea 6

You might want some more off-the-beaten track experiences, and there are a couple of places, such as the Mudhouse, which do this perfectly. You then have a great blend of highlights, and more cultural experiences in the itinerary.
