Southern Morocco & the Sahara Desert
Once you cross the Atlas Mountains, you enter Southern Morocco and the vast expanse of the Sahara Desert. There are two exceptional destinations to visit if you are considering visiting the Moroccan Sahara. The first is Merzouga and the vast dune of the Erg Chebbi. These lie to the south of Fes, about an 8-9 hour drive over the Atlas Mountains. There are flights from Fez and Casablanca to the Moulay Ali Cherif Airport, about two hours drive from the camp. The second is the area around Zagora, and you can fly here from Casablanca or a 5-6 hour drive Ouarzazate through the stunning Draa Valley.
From there, it’s a 4-5 hour drive back to Marrakech, so you usually stay here or in Skoura. Ouarzazate is known as a film city – Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia and Game of Thrones have all been shot here. Nearby Skoura is a delight. A sleepy village with verdant orchards and rolling hills to walk through. It makes a perfect link between a visit to Merzouga or Zagora on the road to Marrakech. If you really want an experience, we can arrange a cross-desert route from Zagora to Merzouga. Less known is the area to the southwest of Morocco. Inland from touristy Agadir and south of Taroudannt, you find the interesting Anti-Atlas. Needless to say, there are many hidden gems in Southern Morocco and the Sahara Desert, and we will create a tailor-made itinerary around any interest.
