The Memory Road, or 'Route De Sud'

Best time to go: September - May (although cold in December & January)
Best for: Ultimate Luxury Holidays, Adventure & Off-the-beaten track, Cultural & Immersive, Repeat Visitors

Memory Road is an exclusive four-wheel drive luxury adventure through the off-the-beaten-track delights of southern Morocco, which quite simply takes the experience of Morocco to a whole new level.

You follow the historic ‘La Route De Sud’, once used by caravanserai who used this road on their route from Timbuktu to Marrakech. The trip is the brainchild of Thierry Teyssier, who also owns the fabulous Dar Ahlam hotel, where you conclude your journey. They have taken over the most fantastic village houses in remote locations and have lovingly crafted the most elegant place to stay for the night.

The trip is only ever operated privately, whether for a couple or a group of up to six friends. You travel with an exceptionally terrific team of ‘experience’ providers. You have an air-conditioned 4×4 and driver (for each couple), a dedicated butler, and a fantastic cook for starters. Besides, all excursions and activities are included, as too meals and drinks (including alcohol). Moreover, it’s all about those little smiles. For instance, imagine the most fabulous picnic with epic views and absolutely no tourists. You certainly feel privileged to be on this journey. In short, it’s the side of Morocco you always wanted to see.

Let’s now turn to the itinerary. We can add extra nights in any of the villages if you want to explore a little deeper or enjoy a day reading a book looking at the views. Firstly, you start in Marrakech, and we can arrange a few nights here should you not want to head out straight away on the 2.5-hour drive to your first stop in Azrarag. This area is known as ‘Argan Valley’, and there are countless Argan trees as far as the eye can see. Stay at the La Maison des Arganiers, a white stone house built over two terraces with stunning views. You are within easy reach of the superb beaches of the Souss-Massa-Draa, and we will set up a lovely picnic lunch for you.

Next, drive inland to the remote village of Tighmert, where you stay at La Maison de L’Oasis, as its name suggests, located within a verdant palm grove. It’s just a short walk to Amtoudi, where you have lunch in an old grain store, overlooking the village below. Afterwards, continue walking through the Akka palm groves before returning to the house for drinks and dinner.

The following day takes you to La Maison Rouge, and this area is known for its spell-binding ksours (castles) in nearby Foumzguid. You again have another wonderful picnic.

Drive onto the dunes of the Sahara Desert, and your luxury Nomadic camp pitched beside the dry lake of Iriki. A stay in the desert is undeniably all about magical sunsets. As you can expect, a drink won’t be far away. Marvel as the stars come out at night.

Finally, you spend two nights at Dar Ahlam, rated as one of the best 100 hotels in the world by Foders. The Palmeraie of Skoura surrounds the Kasbah. You can relax or head off walking in the Valley of the Roses. The pool here is especially inviting after your journey along Memory Road. Moreover, many guests opt to extend their time here.

Either fly back from nearby Ouarzazate to Marrakech or Casablanca or take the drive over the Atlas Mountains, stopping at Ait Benhaddou on the way back Marrakech.
