The Detail
The drive down from Zagora takes about three hours, passing through the final outpost at Mhamid before going 90-minutes over the dunes to the Azalai Camp. Do note that it will take about seven hours to get back to Ouarzazate, so many guests tend to do the Desert Camp first before spending a few nights back in Zagora at the Azalai Lodge before heading north.
The seven white tents are furnished beautifully. You can opt for smaller or larger categories. Most importantly, you find a king-size bed with quality linen. There is also antique furniture, travelling trunks, hand-made Berber rugs and rattan flooring. Battery-operated lanterns light the tents. Outside you have your own table and chairs and a seating area. You’ll have your own en-suite bathroom with a fitted basin, hot shower and chemical toilet.
As you are in the desert, it’s all about heading off into the dunes. Set off at sunset on camels to stop on top of a dune as the sun finally sets.
Dinner is served under candlelight. Feast on a four-course Moroccan and French fusion menu. Alcohol is not available, but you can bring your own supply.
