Paro is where Bhutan’s International Airport is located, and as such acts as either a starting point or end for a tour of Bhutan. It has a hugely impressive Dzong, as well as having the National Museum located in its watchtower, Ta Dzong. The new town only dates from 1985, but all houses were built using traditional Bhutanese architecture. At the far end, you find Taktshang, or Tiger’s Nest Monastery which is for many guests, one of the absolutely highlights of any holiday to Bhutan. Many guests spend at least two, or better three nights in Paro so that you can have time to see all it has to offer. For those who like seeing the Buddhist highlights, Dungtse Lhakhang, Kyichu Lhakhang and Drukgyel Dzong as also well worth visiting. For the more cultural, do visit Vajrayana Art Gallery showcasing the best of modern Bhutanese art in Paro. There are a number of other day-walks you can do in and around Paro, including walks to the village of Choedin, Sangchoki Buddhist College and through the forests to Lhedi Goema. Another superb day trip is to head over the Chele Pass to the Haa Valley. All in all, Paro is an absolute highlight of any tailor-made tour to Bhutan. The Paro Festival takes place in March and can be incorporated into your Bhutan holiday. There are a range of hotels on offer in Paro, from the luxury hotels (Amankora and Uma Paro) to more traditional Bhutanese boutique hotels.
