The Detail
Kasbah Bab Ourika is almost perfectly perched on a hilltop overlooking the picturesque Ourika Valley with the High Atlas Mountains beyond. You are just 40 minutes from Marrakech, and it makes for a wonderful few days exploring this incredible area. Bab Ourika has its own guides, so you can easily head out on a series of walks, short or long.
Bab Ourika was Stephen Skinner’s brainchild, who lovingly crafted the interiors using an understated Moroccan style. You won’t find Arabic bling and ostentation here. It’s all about traditional Berber style, bringing with it elegance and charm. The walls are made from rammed earth (pisé), the floors from natural coloured beijmat. A muted colour scheme of cream, brown and beige seem to all blend together perfectly. It’s stylish, low-key, and in many respects, adorable.
There are just 26 rooms at Bab Ourika, so you have a lovely boutique feel. The rooms are large, with high ceilings, with many having open tadelakt fireplaces, which are refreshing during the colder months. Some of the rooms are located in the main house, and others within the grounds. The Superior Rooms have views to the south-west, rather than towards the Atlas Mountains. As you are here for the views, it’s better to consider the Deluxe Rooms, which also come with a bathtub and separate shower, and some have private terraces. To ensure a terrace, it’s best to consider a Suite. For those who want something special, consider the Pool Suite. Families can opt for the two-bedroom Garden Deluxe Suite. In all rooms, you have top-spec mattresses and fine linen, yet don’t expect TVs. WiFi is available but generally only works in the communal areas.
You can have meals in the dining room or outside on the terrace. They use fresh ingredients sourced from the garden. There is also an adjoining bar with a cosy fire.
The pool is a delightful prospect after a day walking in the Ourika Valley. Also to be considered is the traditional Hammam.
Millis Potter Insight
Kasbah Bab Ourika has always been one of our favourite hotels in the Atlas Mountains. It might not be as luxurious comparatively as Kasbah Tamadot, but in terms of the experience, it comes close. There’s an especially lovely atmosphere about Bab Ourika. For example, you can easily have a long lunch followed by an afternoon by the pool. Those who want to head out and do a day trek can, and equally, you can just relax here. The rooms are designed in that lovely understated Moroccan chic style. All in all, we love a few days stay at Bab Ourika.
