Madaba
Madaba is located on the King’s Highway and best known for the superb mosaics – the most famous being the map on the floor of St George’s Church. The church was constructed in the 19th century, but as they dug down, they found the remnants of an early Byzantine Church complete with the oldest map of the Holy Land in the shape of an ornate mosaic on the floor. It was completed in about 560 AD and depicts all the biblical sites. It was originally around 15m to 25m long and 6m wide, and once contained more than two million pieces. What remains is still astounding. Madaba is usually a short 15-20 minute stop before heading onto Mt Nebo.
