Karnataka and the Deccan
Karnataka is one of India’s hidden secrets; a corner of India that few tourists tend to reach, yet is hugely rewarding if you can fit it into your tour of India. To the north you have the Deccan, an area packed with ancient cities and staggering attractions such as Hampi, home to the Vijayanagar Kingdom, Badami and Bijapur. To the south of that you have find the Hoysala dynasty cities of Belur and Halebid. Mysore was home to wealth Maharajas who were the thorn in the side of the British East India Company until Tipu Sultan was defeated in his fortress at Srirangapatna in 1799. Karnataka and the Deccan also has amazing diversity. Nagarhole and Bandipur National Parks are home to huge numbers of wild elephant, tiger and leopard, and the hills of the Western Ghats in Coorg are known for their natural beauty and coffee plantations, perfect if you want to include a light trekking element when you are on holiday in India.
