The Detail
The first thing you think about when seeing Zighy Bay is simply wow. It is set under a dramatic mountain on one side, and the most wonderful beach on the other. The resort is the complete antithesis of the large, meaningless hotel blocks you find in Dubai. What you find are a collection of 82 pool villas, all lovingly built using traditional Omani architecture. The result is like walking around a traditional Omani village. The villas are set in three rows. The first-row offers guaranteed sea views. The interiors are furnished with a dash of colour and indulgent under-stated luxury – such is the way with Six Senses hotels.
There are 82 villas, and they make use of natural stone and exposed wood to create a subtle sense of understated luxury, and not aiming to be too showy. All villas have private infinity-edge pools. There are oversized indoor bathtubs and outdoor showers. You will also find outdoor dining areas and sun lounges. This means you don’t really need to leave your villa should you so wish. Throw in an espresso machine, WiFi and a flatscreen TV, and you have all you will need.
The Pool Villas are located on the second and third rows, so don’t have sea views. However, you do have more of a sense of privacy. You can opt for some with sea views for a supplement. The Pool Villa Suites are located on the third row, and have a separate living room. Again, you can pay a supplement for those on the first row. There are two-bedroom villas ideal for families. The vast Retreat and Reserve are perfect for those travelling with larger families, or just want the best-of-the-best.
There is a large central swimming pool, where you will, of course, find poolside service. Expect to be offered drinks, ice cream, and snacks. The Spa has nine treatment rooms. You have some of the best treatments you can find. There is also a good gym onsite.
There are four restaurants, offering almost all types of cuisine. Summer House is beside the main pool and serves up lazy lunches and light dinners. Spice Market showcases Arabic cuisine. Shua Shack offers traditional Bedouin dining. Just think of slow-cooked lamb in the sand. Sense on the Edge is located on the mountain above the resort. We definitely recommend a meal here during your stay.
Zighy Bay is possibly our favourite beach hotel in the Middle East. It perfectly blends understated luxury with a commitment to sustainability.
