Devi Garh will certainly create that little wow moment as you approach it. From the outside it is a supremely imposing 18th century Rajput fort located in the village of Delwara, about 40 minutes north of Udaipur. It comes with everything you expect in a Rajput castle, such as ramparts, domes, balconies and turrets. As you move inside you are astonished by the blend of tradition and minimalism. Take the rooms, where they use light neutral colours such as white marble flooring and white-washed walls, set against an odd dash of colour, juxtaposed against traditional Indian artwork or antique windows. They really are rather impressive. Opt for rooms in the Palace section (Palace Suites, Araveli Suites and Devi Garh Suite) or the smaller Garden Rooms down in the courtyard (we think its best being up in the Palace though). Rooms have all the mod-cons such as TVs, Iphone Docks, WiFi and some with indulgent sunken marble tubs, or Suite 37 where you have a shower with a view!
The main restaurant looks out over the rolling countryside beyond, but the great thing about Devi Garh is that you can opt for a range of private dining options in the ramparts of the fort (complete with Sitar player if you wish). There’s a pretty terrace bar to have a pre-dinner cocktail, a spa and a swimming pool. Devi Garh is great if you want to be in the countryside, but with the chance to explore Udaipur by day. You can then sit back after doing your cultural activities and just enjoy your surroundings. You can opt to soak up the immersive experiences in the local surrounding villages, maybe hire some bikes and meander through the countryside, or sit back and enjoy a guided camel ride.
