The Detail

Opened in 1886, the Old Winter Palace is Luxor’s most striking riverfront address. For instance, in 1922, Howard Carter stood on the main staircase and announced the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamen in the hotel – to rapturous applause from the hotel guests. Moreover, its hallways and rooms have played host to countless archaeologists who came to Egypt to visit the Valley of the Kings. In addition, the gardens to the rear are expansive and colourful.

There are 86 rooms and 6 suites at the Old Winter Palace. Firstly, we have to be honest and say they are a little dated in some respects. However, Sofitel ensures the beds are comfortable and the rooms are clean. Most importantly, the rooms are large, with a colonial feel and high ceilings. Entry-level rooms start with Classic Rooms, at 24sqm, however, these are a little small. In all room types, you can opt for a Garden or Nile View. Superior Rooms are larger at 32sqm. Luxury Rooms are 37sqm. In addition, bathrooms come with a bathtub/shower combination. Finally, the Suites offer some of the best views of the Nile, with superb private balconies.

The 1886 á la carte restaurant is a sophisticated affair, with a dress code to match (jacket and ties are the order of the day). On the other hand, La Corniche is the less stuffy all-day dining restaurant. In addition, the Poolside L’Oasis serves pizzas and light meals in the garden. The Grand Central Park Bar or Ruby-red is the perfect place to end your day with a drink or two.

There is a lovely outdoor pool in the gardens. Adjoining the gardens is the 4* Pavilion Winter Luxor which shares the pool and facilities of the Winter Palace. Do note the hotel does not have a gym or fitness centre or a spa. You are located right in the heart of Luxor, and for instance, you can walk to Luxor Temple very easily.
