The Detail
The politician, Vijay Goel, spent 10 years meticulously restoring and enhancing Dharampura Haveli. It is much like a Moroccan Riad, with the rooms surrounding a central courtyard and the Haveli features a lovely rooftop. Staying here is like stepping back in time, especially if you are adverse to ‘international’ hotels. Expect to find patterned tiled floors and quirky alcoves featuring colourful lamps. Each weekend, traditional dancers perform in the restaurant, which adds a sense of romance to the atmosphere.
Dharampura Haveli is located in the heart of Old Delhi down the small alleyways, and therefore has no access to vehicles. To reach the Haveli, you have to walk the final 300 yards on foot. Your bags will be carried by the hotel porters. Head to the rooftop, and see Old Delhi come alive at night. Listen to the call to prayer at the Jama Masjid and children flying kites from nearby rooftops.
There are 14 rooms at Darampura Haveli, which will feature pale stone and ornately designed tiled floors. In addition, they feature delightful large heavy wood king-sized beds. The six Standard rooms (Jharoka) are a little too small, so we therefore generally opt for the Diwan-i-Khas rooms, which offer far more space. Dharampura Haveli also two large Shah Jahan suites. Bathrooms feature walk-in showers but no bathtubs.
‘Lakhori’ multi-cuisine restaurant at Dharampura Haveli serves up a range of dishes, and we heavily suggest you try the Indian fare. Traditional Indian recipes come to the fore, featuring mouthwateringly delicious kebabs and delectable butter chicken curry. Indeed, there are a few places in Delhi which offers such a romantic and truly Indian setting, especially when traditional Indian dancers are in full flow each weekend.
If you’re looking for a range of facilities such as a swimming pool, a spa and fitness centre, then Dharampura Haveli might mot be the best fit for you. This is a totally different experience and it is ideal for those who like to immerse themselves in the destination. In short, if you like characterful accommodation, then this is the place for you.
Millis Potter Insight
Dharampura Haveli is not for everyone, but we think it is wonderful. You are in the heart of Old Delhi, meaning you can just walk off into the markets and immerse yourself in the destination. We love the rooftop, where you can spend hours looking out over the city. Admittedly, the service is not like you find at say the Oberoi. In addition, you won’t find swimming pools, spas or gyms here. Furthermore, you do wake up to the call to prayer and the odd dog barking. In truth, this is its overall charm. Above all, it is about this old-world Indian atmosphere and sense of romance. In short, it is a truly Indian experience.
