The Bishnoi are a tribe who live in and around Jodhpur, best seen near the village of Rohat, and date from the 16th century following 29 tenets of living (Bish means nine, and noi means nine). Ten tenets deal with maintaining a healthy life (such as taking a bath every day and not drinking alcohol or smoking), seven about being good neighbours, five about religion and eight looking after the land (they don’t kill animals or cut down trees). They generally wear white clothes, as blue due is sourced by chopping healthy shrubs. You can meet the locals and see how they live in what is a pretty dry and arid climate, making the most of what they have to create a sustainable life.
