The Detail

La Sultana Oualidea is ideally situated for a perfect beginning or conclusion of a tour of Morocco. Most importantly, you are just two and a half hours from the airport in Casablanca or three hours from Marrakech. Also, Essaouira is just under three hours away. You feel very much away from it all, sheltered by cliffs and next to green pastureland, salt-water marshes and overlooking the lagoon.

There is something of an ‘Arabian Nights’ feel about La Sultana Oualidia. The architecture is paired back, and the gardens are delightful. You can wander through seeing palm trees, cacti and exotic plants that merge seamlessly into the views of the lagoon and ocean beyond. The lagoon also attracts egrets, herons and flamingos.

There are just 11 rooms at La Sultana Oualidia. The interiors are a delightful mix of Moroccan design and modern comfort. Each room has its own terrace, utilising the superb views, and also have an outdoor Jacuzzi. Honey-combed walls match the sand-coloured tiled floors and soft neutral fixtures and furnishing. For those wanting the best, there is the lovely Apartment Suite at the top of the hotel, with the best views.

The Treehouse Suite is a unique experience, perched in a tree overlooking the lagoon and ideal for a honeymoon. The rooms have air-conditioning/heating, hairdryer, mini-bar, safe and satellite TV. They lead in with the Panorama Suite (50sqm) with views over the gardens. The Lagoon Suite (55sqm) have views over the lagoon. The Ocean Suites (75sqm) have a separate lounge, additional toilet and the best views.

Dining & Facilities

The advantage of all rooms having their own terrace is that you usually have breakfast brought to you each morning. La Sultana Oualidia specialises in setting up unique dining locations. This could be a picnic on the beach, the Ocean Deck, the sunken lagoon restaurant or Mast Restaurant. The seafood is as good as you will find anywhere. The nearby oyster bed ensures a fresh supply, and for non-fish lovers, the tagines and western dishes are also exceptional.

There is a centrally located infinity-edged swimming pool, next to Romanesque limestone columns with five Jacuzzis and a salon bar. There is also a pool down by the lagoon and another indoor pool in the spa. This also features a fitness room, indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, and a hammam.

Millis Potter Insight

After all, you will have completed the cultural touring of Morocco, and may just want to kick back with a good book. In addition, you can easily take a flight back from Marrakech or Casablanca on the same day. The rooms are particularly well designed, many with sea views. Obviously, given the location, the seafood here is fantastic. Moreover, the temperatures here are perfect at all times of the year. For this reason, you can easily just spend a week here, or more.
