The Hotel @ Tharabar Gate’s big plus point is its location, being just a hop, skip and a jump from the main temple complex. You can easily hire bikes and have a quick explore of the nearby temples, the most famous being the Ananda Temple.
There are 84 rooms at Tharabar Gate, set within landscaped tropical bamboo gardens. The rooms have high ceilings and polished teak floors and are comfortably furnished, although they do feel a little spartan in all honesty. They lead out to a small terrace at the back set within a walled garden, although most guests like to sit beside the pool or in the airy open-air lobby area sipping a cocktail or two. Older rooms feature bathtubs with attached shower, with the newer rooms offering walk-in showers. The rooms have flatscreen TVs, minibars and a safe. WiFi is available throughout the hotel (although in Burma this is always a little temperamental!)
There are two restaurants, the French Garden and open-air Ananda Restaurant serving a mix of Western and Asian cuisine. The hotel has an inviting swimming pool to cool off in. The spa offers a range of treatments, perfect to rejuvenate weary legs after a walk around the temples of Bagan.
