It’s a slight shame that Shobak tends to get overlooked in favour of Kerak. Admitadly, Kerak is more complete than Shobak, but the position of the castle atop of Royal Mountain is hard to beat.
Shobak was constructed by Baldwin I in 1115, and withstood countless attacks by Saladin until it fell in 1189, after a mighty 18-month siege. There is an interesting secret passageway that leads to a subterranean spring (hence why they could hold out for so long). Explore small churches, the prison, baptistery, watchtower and catacombs.
