Day treks from Bumthang

There are so many treks in and around Bumthang that you could easily spend a week doing all of them! Let’s start with the best for views, the Hermit Hike. It offers amazing views over the Choekhor Valley and begins in Bumthang at the Tamshing Lhakhang before heading up to Padhma Samawa Temple. Head to Drakacholing, where hermits meditate, generally staying for 3 years, 3 months and 3 days in complete isolation. This takes about 2.5 hours in total. A gentler more cultural trek is the 2-3 hour Past Age Trek. Visit local farmhouses and try the local ‘khuley’ or buckwheat pancakes. See the Thangbi Goemba temple and Nga Lhakhang before seeing the archeological remains of Drapham Dzong. The Shugdrak Hike is a short trek taking about 30 minutes on the way up and 20 minutes on the way down. It is one of the four holy cliffs and the views from the top are spectacular. Perfect for a picnic lunch.
