Over on the as yet unspoilt east coast is one of Sri Lanka’s most elegant beach hotels, set on a beautiful beach with calm turquoise seas. Uga Bay has 47 Suites and Studios set in the main hotel as well as a luxurious 2 bedroom villa set right on the beach. With a huge beachfront pool and plenty of space to spread out on the beach, relaxation is the key word here, especially if you treat yourself to a massage at the wonderful underground spa. However, there is plenty more on offer for the more active with visits to colourful local villages and markets, Hindu temples and the Dutch fort at Batticaloa. The marine life here is spectacular and some nearby shipwrecks are waiting to be discovered covered in colourful tropical fish. Back at the hotel the service is excellent, as is the cuisine all contributing to Uga Bay’s reputation as the best hotel on the east coast.
Unlike some of the beach hotels around Galle, the beaches here at Passekudah are wide with white sand and the sea is calm and safe to swim in. The best time to visit is between March and October when the rest of the island starts to experiences its rains so Uga Bay is the perfect beach hotel for our summer months. Although getting here involves a longer journey than the southern beaches, this part of the east coast works well in combination with the tea hills around Kandy, the jungle lodge of Gal Oya and the cultural sites at Pollonnaruwa. There are also several seaplane flights from Colombo and Kandy if the drive seems too long. Uga Bay is ideal for some down time for families and couples with great facilities and dining options and a visit now is recommended before the east coast starts developing.
