As you leave the hustle and bustle of Chowringhee and enter The Oberoi Grand, it is like stepping into a different world. As you move into the lush surroundings of the central courtyard, you quite honestly forget you are in Calcutta. It has been a hotel for over a century, and during the Second World War, was home to over 4000 US troops. The two lower categories (Deluxe and Luxury Rooms) face over the city and markets, and tend to be a little noisy, so we always suggest opting for Premier Rooms and above. The carpeted rooms are all colonial in design with four-poster beds and tastefully furnished bathrooms. We love the Premier Rooms with Balcony, giving you the chance to sit out and look at the gardens. The Suites are lovely; the Classic Suite with a living space, the Deluxe Suite with a separate living room, the Luxury Suite is even larger living areas and bedrooms, and the Presidential Suite has two bedrooms and also a dining room. The food is exceptional, La Terrasse is the all-day dining option, Baan Thai is as its name suggests, a speciality Thai Restaurant and you can then relax with an evening cocktail at the Chowringhee Bar. The Oberoi Grand also has a delightful outdoor pool, spa and fitness centre.
