The Detail

Putao offers by far the best trekking in Burma, and is still very much off-the-beaten track. You are right up in the Burmese Himalayas, so the views are spectacular. We love luxury lodges that are totally away from it all, giving you the chance to explore the authentic and immersive experiences by day, and rest totally comfortably at night. Malikha was designed by Jean Michel Gathy, noted for his work with Aman Hotels, and the result was a chic, stylish lodge that blends perfectly with the natural surroundings. Malikha overlooks the Nam Lang River and the snow-capped mountains beyond.

At the centre of the lodge, you find the restaurant and bar, complete with toasty central fire-pits. There are just 15 rooms at Malikha, mostly overlooking the river and set within the landscaped gardens. The central feature is the 6ft round teak bathtub, ideal for a soak after a day of walking. The rooms are huge, with high ceilings and a lovely verandah out the front. Add to that a toasty wood-burner, his and hers handcrafted teak wash basins, and the comfiest of beds and you are in for a really rather pleasant stay.

Experiences include cruising down the Nam Lang River and stopping for an amazing picnic lunch on the sandbank, or just trekking through local tribal villages. The slight downside is that Malikha is the most expensive hotel in Burma, yet we think the experience is worth it.
