The Detail
Glenburn Penthouse
The Glenburn Penthouse occupies the two floors on top of a sleek office building in the heart of Calcutta. The care and attention taken in designing this hotel has been second-to-none. The family who brought us the Glenburn Penthouse also own the lovely Glenburn Tea Estate in Darjeeling. For that reason, they know everything that guests like in a hotel!
Rooms
The colonial themed rooms at blend old and new perfectly. The Glenburn Penthouse utilises space and light to offer places that jump out with style and sophistication. Some rooms have balconies, and two have rooftop gardens with jacuzzis. You’ll find old-school roll-top bathtubs, rainforest showers, four-poster beds and a scattering of mesmerizing antique furniture. Above all, you won’t find better rooms in Calcutta, or indeed many city hotels in India.
Facilities
We love the main sitting room at Glenburn Penthouse, with its hand-made wallpaper depicting the history of Calcutta. You can relax in the glass-walled conservatory, or try a treatment or two in the small spa. The pièce de résistance are quite definitely the views from the top floor from Glenburn Penthouse. You have a wonderful 360-degree view over the city. Most noteworthy, the Glenburn Penthouse comes alive when you head upstairs. You’ll find rooftop al-fresco dining and an infinity swimming pool from where you can peer out over the city. Feast on delicious Bengali delicacies, or dine in the elegant dining room downstairs. Look out over the Maidan, Calcutta’s vast central park featuring the Victoria Memorial & St Pauls Cathedral over the other side, and Eden Gardens to the right (Calcutta’s main cricket ground).
Things to Do
The spell-binding life and culture of Calcutta is right on your doorstep. Furthermore, you can zip out and have a walk before retreating to your rooftop boutique haven. There is so much to see and do in Calcutta that you can easily spend several days with one of Millis Potter’s expert guides. Above all, as you might have gathered, we rather like the Gkenburn Penthouse. We would recommend a stay here for three or more days, so that you can fully explore Calcutta, as it should be seen and experienced!

Our Opinion of Glenburn Penthouse
As you can tell by our description, we are certainly excited the Glenburn Penthouse has finally opened! Although we love its main alternative, The Oberoi Grand, we feel its smaller size and beautiful views make our preferred option. In some ways, The Oberoi Grand has probably for too long been the only option in town. Consequently, the Glenburn Penthouse will ensure the pull their socks up a little! Nothing quite beats outside al fresco dining in the subcontinent, and Calcutta cityscape probably rivals any city in India. The fact the owners of Glenburn Tea Estate run it ensures that the levels of service are second-to-none. The rooms are lovely, offering a blend of colonial and everything you want from a modern hotel room. Above all, it’s just really rather adorable and perfect.
