The Detail
There are just five rooms at Dar Maya, and we think it’s the best option to stay in Essaouira. It was renovated by British ex-pat Gareth Turpin, who certainly has an eye for design. The relaxing cream plasterwork, or tadelakt, blends with an Art Deco feel and Arabic arches, nooks and crannies. The rooms are equally as stylish. Chocolate, coffee and champagne colours come to the fore. The bathrooms are heavenly indulgent, featuring sunken bathtubs and underfloor heating. The rooms also have real wood fireplaces, making them exceptionally cosy – especially if the Atlantic winds blow in Essaouira.
Riads are all about their rooftops, and Dar Maya doesn’t disappoint. You have a heated plunge pool with views of the ocean. There are a few sun loungers and a canopy if you should get too much of the sun. On the lower floor, there is a courtyard with a fountain and dining room. On the third floor, you have a lounge with a cosy fireplace. There is an adjoining library.
A three-course dinner of served each night, and you can also opt for a light lunch on request (although you are very close to some fantastic options nearby). There is a small Hammam and countless little nooks and crannies where you can sit and read a book or have a drink.
