Drive to the naval base, and take a shuttle boat to Sober Island to walk past the British built gun batteries and watchtowers, which protected Trincomalee Harbour, slowly being reclaimed by the jungle. Continue to one of the coves for a picnic lunch. Back on the mainland, visit the Second World War cemetery before heading to Fort Frederick, constructed in 1624, and still in use as a military fortress. You can walk inside and visit the Koneswaram Temple in time for the afternoon pooja. Continue through the lively Trincomalee market to end your day, seeing the local way of life. This Hindu culture is different from what you find in the south of Sri Lanka.
