Ritigala is a former forest-monastery and said to be the place where the Hindu god Hanuman jumped back to India after discovering where Sita was being held captive. It became the spot where hermits began to settle, and so impressed was the king, Sena I, that he built a monastery in their honour. It’s a great place to wander around through the surrounding forests and is one of Sri Lanka‘s superb off-the-beaten-track experiences.
