Meenakshi Temple
The Meenakshi Amman Temple is possibly the finest example of south Indian temple architecture dating from the 17th century. It features 12 tall gopurams (gateway towers), encrusted with a patchwork of gods, demons and goddesses, painted beautifully. The story goes that Meenakshi was born with three breasts, but when she met her husband, it would melt away. She met Shiva, and the prophecy came true. Every evening at 9pm, a procession carries the icon of Shiva to the shrine to spend the night in the Meenakshi Shrine.
