Elephanta Island

The cave temples on Elephanta Island are certainly worth visiting when you reach Bombay on your tour of India. There are two groups of caves, one being a collection of five Hindu caves, and another two Buddhist Caves. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the stone sculptures have been hand-carved and date from the 5th – 8th centuries. You reach Elephanta Island by public ferry, taking a private guide with you.
