A Walking Holiday in Jordan

Best time to go: March to May & October to November
Best for: Trekking & Walking, Adventure & Off-the-beaten track

This private walking holiday to Jordan is designed for those who like to get out-and-about and see the country on two feet. We have designed a series of day-walks which allow you to see all the highlights, but also marvel at the natural beauty of Jordan’s stunning landscapes. You will of course be looked after by a superb team of private drivers and personal guides throughout.

Amman & Northern Jordan

You begin in Amman and spend your first two nights in Jordan’s capital city. We suggest spending the following morning at the incredible Roman city of Jerash. You will walk around this spectacular site with your private guide, taking about three hours. You’ll be greeted by the imposing triple-arched gateway built to honour the Emperor Hadrian’s arrival at Jerash in 129 AD. Next, you will visit the Temples of Zeus, the mile-long Street of Columns, Cardo Maximus, the colonnaded streets, and more than 17 churches that were found in Jerash.

Return to Amman for an immersive walking tour of the city. As well seeing as the famous Citadel and the Roman Amphitheatre, you will dip into the souks and see a little of modern Amman.

Dana to Feynan Walk

The following day, you will be driven south along the historic King’s Highway. You will stop at the interesting biblical cites of Madaba and Mt Nebo en route. You will arrive at the pretty village of Dana, which is perched on the edge of the dramatic Wadi Dana. You’ll stay at the incredible Dana Guest House, and that night feast on traditional Jordanian fare. The next day, you will walk down from Dana Guest House to Feynan Eco Lodge, taking about five hours. The reserve’s terrain drops 1500m to sea-level, and the geology switches from limestone to sandstone to granite, all seen during the walk. You often pass nomadic bedouins along the who who invite you for a cup of tea. This trek is the starting point, and best portion of the Dana to Petra trek which was voted one of the World’s Best Hikes by National Geographic.

Walks Around Petra

Drive to Petra where you will spend three nights. That night, you might like to experience a little taste of Jordanian cuisine at Petra Kitchen. The following day will be a full day inside Petra, seeing the main sights in the morning, followed by the three-hour Wadi Farasa trek in the afternoon. This trek takes you to hidden tombs around Petra that many tourists don’t visit. That night you can return to Petra for ‘Petra by Night‘.

The second day in Petra involves another day trek as you walk up Jebel Haroun for the best views you can experience in Petra. This six-hour strenuous the mountain is thought to be the biblical Mt Hor – the burial place of Moses’ brother Aaron. You also go via Snake Monument, an eroded stone pillar capped with a serpentine form appears to keep guard over the periphery of the Ancient City of Petra. For those who want a more leisurely trek, we suggest the three-hour ‘Backdoor into Petra‘ trek from Little Petra to the Monastery.

Desert Walking in Wadi Rum

Your walking holiday in Jordan then turns to the vast, beautiful desert of Wadi Rum. You first set out on the Makharas Canyon Hike. This is a three-hour walk in the vicinity of Wadi Rum’s famed ‘Seven Pillars of Wisdom’ combines a magical canyon, red sands and grand views of Jebel Barrah and Umm Nfoos. The second day involves a mixture of a jeep drive through the desert and a two-hour walk guided Barragh Canyon Hike. This allows you to see the most picturesque corners of Wadi Rum. For those more active, we could include the walk up the summit of Jebel Umm Ad Dami (1,854m) – Jordan’s highest mountain. This is usually only advised for experienced walkers.

R&R on the Dead Sea

You then head back north to the Dead Sea for two days of R&R where you can dip into the superb spas to massage your well-worked legs. For those guests who are more active, you could take the Wadi Mujib trail.
