The Story

Best time to go: October - April
Best for: Slow Travel, Culture & Beach

The Andaman Islands are closer to Burma and Thailand than they are to India, and yet they haven’t seen the huge development that has blighted many of these picture-perfect beach destinations. Getting there is, admittedly, quite an effort. You need to fly to Calcutta, Mumbai or Chennai and then take another internal flight to Port Blair. Once there, board the ferry to Havelock Island. Only the most intrepid of travellers made it to the Andaman Islands, but in recent years there have been two good quality hotels established, one in the hills and another down on the coast. Begin at Jalakara, a labour of love and opened in 2016.  Spend your days exploring the other islands, taking a nature walk and sea kayaking. Move down to the coast to stay at Barefoot. Here you can spend your days relaxing, diving or snorkelling. Return to Madras for a night before flying home.
