The Penthouse is located over two floors on top of a relatively new, sleek office building in the heart of Calcutta. The care and attention taken in designing this hotel has been second-to-none, and the family which brought us the Penthouse also own the lovely Glenburn Tea Estate in Darjeeling, so they know almost everything about what guests like in a hotel! The colonial themed rooms blend old and new perfectly, perfectly utilising space and light to offer rooms that jump out with style and sophistication. Some rooms have balconies, and two have rooftop gardens with jacuzzis. You’ll find old-school roll-top bathtubs, rainforest showers, four-poster beds and a scattering of mesmerising antique furniture. All in all, you won’t find better rooms in Calcutta, or indeed many city hotels in India.
We love the main sitting room, with its hand-made wallpaper depicting the history of Calcutta. Relax in the glass-walled conservatory, or try a treatment or two in the small spa.
The pièce de résistance are quite definitely the views from the top floor. You have a 360 degree view over the city, and the Penthouse comes alive when you head upstairs. You’ll find rooftop al-fresco dining and an infinity swimming pool from where you can peer out over the city. Feast on delicious Bengali delicacies, or dine in the graceful dining room downstairs. Look out over the Maidan, Calcutta’s vast central park featuring the Victoria Memorial & St Pauls Cathedral over the other side, and Eden Gardens to the right (Calcutta’s main cricket ground). The spell-binding life and culture of Calcutta is right on your doorstep, and you can just zip out and have a walk before retreating back to your rooftop boutique haven. There is so much to see and do in Calcutta that you can easily spend a number of days with one of Millis Potter’s expert guides. All in all, as you might have gathered, we really rather like the Penthouse, and would definitely recommend a stay here for three or more days, so that you can fully explore Calcutta as it should be seen and experienced!
Millis Potter Insight
As you can tell by our description, we are so excited the the Penthouse has finally opened! Although we love it’s main alternative, The Oberoi Grand, we feel it’s smaller size and wonderful views make it a superior option. In some ways, The Oberoi Grand has for too long been the only option in town and no doubt the Penthouse will ensure the pull their socks up a little! Nothing quite beats outside al fresco dining in the subcontinent, and Calcutta cityscape rivals any city in India. The fact it is run by the owners of Glenburn Tea Estate is crucial in ensuring the levels of service are second-to-none. The rooms are lovely – a blend of colonial and everything you want from a modern hotel room. All in all, it’s just really rather adorable and perfect.
