The Detail
Sher Bagh is one of our favourite places to stay in India; a camp which evokes the glamour and elegance of the 1920s. The tents curve around a manicured lawn, complete with antique furniture and bursting with colonial style. They are all air-conditioned, complete with a cosy veranda. The tents are adorned with old-world charm, from the old-school writing desks, bed-side tables and lanterns and all are carpeted. The Pukka Sahib Suite and Royal Suite have far more privacy with the latter complete with its own pool. At night, they drop down mosquito nets over the beds, and in the winter add a warming hot water bottle. It goes without saying they use the finest cottons and the little details are there in abundance – you won’t feel like you are in a tent at all. The en-suite bathrooms feature rainforest showers and copper fitted basins.
Sherbagh is a part of Relais & Chateau and so the food is absolutely scrummy. A blend of Indian and Western, you sit down to three-course lunches, sandwiches on your game drive, afternoon tea and dinner served beside the camp-fire. There is a main fixed central building where you relax and dine. There is a delightful pool overlooking the park and a massage tent. The highlight of Ranthambore is of course the game drives, which depart in the early mornings and late afternoons. We generally say you should stay at least two or better three nights to ensure a variety of wildlife sightings. You won’t just have the chance to see the many tigers of Ranthambore, but you can see bear, deer, peacocks, crocodiles, monkeys and a host of eclectic birdlife.
