The Detail
The Mountain Top Lodge is just is just a five-minute walk from the Golden Rock. It takes about three and a half hours to drive there from Rangoon followed by a 45 minute transfer up the bumpy track to the Mountain Top Hotel. The hotel is very simple, yet for one night it is clean and comfortable and allows you to both see the Golden Rock at sunset and sunrise which is not possible on a day-trip. It is the only hotel of any note in the area, and as long as you aren’t expecting much and just let the experience of seeing the Golden Rock, you will be OK! The views from the rooms are really rather stunning, but do note the hotel is built on a mountainside and around rocks and the steps are very steep. Buddhist pilgrims come from far and wide to visit Golden Rock, and it is this more immersive experience that will surprise you. Most rooms are twin-bedded but we can request a double. There are also three Super-Deluxe Rooms which have the best views and air-conditioning, but these tend to book up early. The Deluxe Rooms have a ceiling fan, but generally the same layout. The rooms are en-suite with a shower. The restaurant has excellent views, but a pretty limited Burmese and Chinese menu (you are only here for a night in any case!). There is intermittent WiFi available. Don’t be totally put off, the real reason why you stay here is to see this magical rock as the sun sets and rises, and meet the people who revere it so much.
