The Detail
For many years the north east of Sri Lanka around Trincomalee was a no go area due to the devastating civil war that continued until 2009. As this part of the country is now recovering, tourism is developing but it still feels very untouched and culturally very different to the busy south west. Jungle Bay is set on a pristine white sand beach about 40 minutes north of Trincomalee and can be accessed by 7hr train or drive from Colombo or a short hop on a seaplane. As an Uga Resort it is of a very high standard and this is reflected in the levels of accommodation, dining and service even though this part of the country is definitely less sophisticated than places such as Colombo and Galle. The 48 cabins offer a rustic luxury and are set in a jungle oasis, many set right on the beach. Spend your time here relaxing on the stunning beach or swimming in the sea – something you are often unable to do in the south – or take a trip over to Pigeon Island for some great snorkelling or diving. Exploring the local culture is also rewarding with Trinco being home to sKoneswaramome Temple and the fascinating Fort Frederick.
Millis Potter Insight
The north east is not for everyone, due to its hard to reach location and less than sophisticated tourism industry making getting around and levels of service not as smooth as in more developed areas. However, this is also its charm and its unspoilt beaches and quiet villages mean it is well worth a trip for those looking to get off the beaten track. The recent civil war has certainly left its mark and there is still quite a strong military presence but the locals are happy to see tourists and the area is certain to develop fast so now is the time to go. The north east has a different climate to the west and south and the best time to visit is between March and October so is a great addition to a trip during the summer months. The sea is generally calmer on this side making swimming in the sea a joy and there is some great marine life to enjoy. Jungle Beach has been sensitively created taking into account its natural surroundings and a stay here feels like a real treat in such an unspoilt setting.
